On December 12, 2019 Holy Family Radio publicly filed with the FCC to acquire WONB 94.9 FM, licensed to Ada, OH from Ohio Northern University.
From nearly the very beginning of its founding in August 2010, Holy Family Radio has sought to expand its coverage to include the Lima and surrounding areas of the Toledo diocese. An attempt was made to acquire an FM translator signal in 2016, but we were outbid by one of the big commercial broadcasters who moved it to the Cincinnati area. Undeterred, we continued to seek acquisition targets that made sense for us.
We are excited to report that our efforts have paid off and become fruitful as we have entered into an agreement with Ohio Northern University to purchase their radio station, WONB "The Beat", licensed to Ada, OH. The application for consent to transfer the license was published on December 12, 2019 by the FCC.
WONB 94.9 FM is a Class A 3,000 watt non-commercial radio station located in Ada, OH on the campus of Ohio Northern University. When the transaction is approved and closed in late February or early March, WONB will expand Holy Family Radio's audience to nearly 200,000 souls. The new station will allow Holy Family Radio to cover the city of Lima in its local area and nearly all of the southern border counties of the Toledo diocese: Allen, Hancock, Wyandot and some of Van Wert.
As a condition of the transaction, ONU will retain the WONB call letters. Holy Family Radio will be requesting new call letters for the station and are yet to be determined.
We are so excited to share this news and this next chapter in our apostolate's history!
